Vila Baleira concentrates the majority of the island's population: it was here that the very first colony of the archipelago was founded in 1419. This "big village" serving as the capital nowadays lives at the quiet rhythm of the ocean swells. The long and famous golden beach, languishing almost 8 kilometres west of the city, is without doubt the most beautiful asset of this small piece of land lost in the middle of the Atlantic. The church of the Madonna of Piety, as well as the house-museum of Christopher Columbus, are also worth a visit. It is also in Vila Baleira that most visitors to the island will stay.
