IGREJA NOSSA SENHORA DA PIEDADE

The matrix church of Porto Santo or Church of the Madonna of Mercy dates back to 1430; it was plundered in 1566 and suffered numerous fires, caused by pirates and privateers who landed on the island, and preserves beautiful altarpieces with magnificent paintings by Martim Conrado and Max Römer. On the right, one of the chapels of the building contains a series of gilded wooden busts presenting the twelve apostles. Outside, a Deposition in bluish azulejos stands out on its immaculate walls.
