Situated on a mountainside at an altitude of 1,090 m and surrounded by orchards, Pedoulas enjoys beautiful views of the Troodos massif. The village is renowned for the purity of its water, its cherries and its twelve churches, in particular that of the Archangel Michael, a Unesco World Heritage Site. It is also the birthplace of the father of British billionaire Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of the EasyJet airline. Since 2005, the village has been home to the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation's environmental center, which teaches Cypriot schoolchildren about environmental protection. The name Pedoulas is said to derive from the Greek words pepiada/πεδιάδα ("valley") and laos/λαός ("people"). Popular with Nicosians who come here in all seasons, the village is home to several fountains, restaurants and charming accommodations, as well as two small museums (Byzantine Museum and Folk Museum) that are, alas, often closed.
