Forming the westernmost part of Cyprus, Akamas is a 300 km2 peninsula dominated by a small wooded massif reaching 400 m in altitude. And it's one of the island's wildest and most beautiful places, with no paved roads whatsoever. Now a national park, it's also a place of legend. It is named after the Greek hero Acamas, son of Phaedra and Theseus, who founded the Cypriot city of Soli on his return from the Trojan War. But it's above all for Aphrodite, the goddess of love, that visitors flock here: to see her famous "baths" and admire the scenery along the paths named after her and her lover Adonis. But behind the dream, there's reality. Firstly, the tourist area around the Baths of Aphrodite is far too crowded for our taste in summer. Secondly, if Akamas is so well preserved, it's because it was a shooting range for a long time... So, along the paths that criss-cross the peninsula, yellow signs remind us "not to touch military debris".
