On the Laona plateau, at an altitude of 470 metres, this small wine-growing village is best known for its Kremiotis river, which flows past old mills and wash-houses and falls in beautiful waterfalls in the surrounding area. A few old buildings also remain. One of them housed Cyprus' first casino, created at the end of the Ottoman period, in 1870, and still adorned with frescoes depicting locals in traditional costumes. Another local pride is the birthplace of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios, who was the most powerful figure in the Greek Cypriot community between 1779 and 1809. You can also stay overnight at the Makrinari house, an old restored dwelling that is part of the national agrotourism network. From Kritou Tera, there are two routes to Polis and Chrysochous Bay. You can reach the B7 national road, 5 km to the east, passing by the superb Franco-Byzantine church of Agia Ekaterini Phytefkia. And if you opt for the more direct local road E 711, you'll be confronted with a strange optical illusion on the stretch known as Gravity Road.
