Cape Pomos marks the end of the (somewhat monotonous) Chrysochous Bay. Here, the rocky coastline forms pretty coves of black sand and pebbles. And the village itself, nestled around a fishing port and surrounded by wooded hills, has a certain charm, as do a number of restaurants and accommodations. You'll enjoy strolling around the cape where the Tillyrie coast and Nicosia district begin. At the water's edge, near a pebble beach, you can see the "Dragon's Cave". According to legend, it was home to a creature that defended the inhabitants against pirates. Above, stairs lead to another cavity dug out in ancient times, probably to serve as a burial chamber. But little more is known. The name Pomos is derived from the word vomos (βωμός) meaning "altar". And while little is known about the village's history, it was in the area in 1934 that the famous "Idol of Pomos" was discovered: an 8 cm-high cruciform steatite statuette of a woman dating from around 3,000 B.C. Preserved in the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia, it also adorns the Cypriot €1 and €2 coins.
