The third most populous city in the Northern Zone, after Nicosia-North and Famagusta, Kyrenia is renowned for its medieval fortress, its Shipwreck Museum and its magnificent Old Port, which resembles Saint-Tropez. Kyrenia was the first city to be captured by the Turks during the 1974 invasion, when the Greek Cypriots, who made up 65% of the 4,000 inhabitants, as well as the Maronite and Armenian minorities (5%), were suddenly forced into exile. Re-populated by Turkish Cypriots expelled from towns in the southern zone (Limassol, Polis...), then by settlers from Turkey, Kyrenia became the busiest seaside resort in the northern zone. In summer, tourists - mainly Turkish and British - flock to the terraces along the quayside and keep the noise level up until late at night. Nevertheless, the small town center is absolutely charming and rich in places to visit. It's also a good base from which to explore the Morphou region, the Pentadactylos mountains and the Karpas peninsula.
