At 1,380 m above sea level, Prodromos is the highest inhabited village in Cyprus, popular for its apples and its proximity to the Mount Olympus ski resort, 6.4 km to the southeast. Although the harsh living conditions have driven away the inhabitants (almost 500 in the 1970s), the number of second homes is on the rise. Prodromos is also looking forward to the reopening of its prestigious Hotel Berengaria. Built in 1931 and closed in 1984, this grand stone building owes its name to the only English queen never to have set foot in England: Berengaria of Navarre (c. 1165-1230), the last wife of Richard the Lionheart, whom she married in Limassol in 1191. Work began in 2023 on the new 40-room luxury resort. The village itself owes its name to St. John the Baptist, known as "John the Forerunner" in Greek (Ioannis o Prodromos). Prodromos is the starting point for two well-marked footpaths: one to the village of Lemythou (2 km to the west), the other to Zoumi (3 km to the northeast).
