Known as the "village of balconies", Galata is home to five early 16th-century painted churches, including the Panagia tis Podithou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In ancient times, Galata was a place of worship for the goddess Aphrodite. The name Galata derives from the nymph Galatea, born under the hands of the sculptor Pygmalion, whom Aphrodite is said to have brought back to life.
