The highest village in the Solea valley, at 667 meters above sea level, Kakopetria enjoys a pleasant setting at the confluence of the Karkotis and Garillis rivers. Surrounded by green hills and orchards, it's a popular destination for Nicosia's summer visitors. On the hilltop, the church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis is one of the most precious of the ten painted churches on the Troodos, a UNESCO World Heritage site. And the nearby village of Galata is home to another of these listed churches, Panagia tis Podithou. Kakopetria boasts other old churches, small museums, hiking trails, hotels, cafés and restaurants, as well as vendors selling honey, jams and soutzouki. The village is known as "Bad Stone" or "Cursed Stone". Legend has it that the large boulder, visible near the central square, once caused the death of a young couple.
