Until 1974, Agia Napa was a peaceful village on the outskirts of Famagusta, then the island's biggest tourist destination. After the Turkish invasion, everything changed. The pretty "wooded valley" (napa) turned into a terrible seaside resort with anarchic development. Attracting some 40,000 tourists a day in summer (mainly Russian and British), the small town of Agia Napa has quite simply become the worst seaside resort in Cyprus: concrete, crowded beaches, very expensive hotels, bad exotic restaurants, nightlife, drugs, alcohol... If Agia Napa was once a "normal" village, today the presence of a small country cemetery seems quite incongruous between a nightclub and a sushi restaurant. A visit to the superb monastery in the middle of the village or a sunset at Cape Greko will give you some peace and quiet.
