Situated along the buffer zone and on the edge of an ancient dried-up lake that gives it its name of "near the lake", Paralimni is not a pretty town. It grew too fast: in 1974, its population exploded with the massive arrival of Greek Cypriot refugees driven out of Famagusta. The small center is organized around the old Agios Georgios church (1859), the new Agios Georgios church (1966) and a traditional 19th-century house that houses a folk museum (Monday-Friday 7am-3pm, free). Beyond this, residential areas stretch for 5 km to the shore. The beaches are lined with ugly tourist facilities. But in the far north, at the edge of the buffer zone, the secluded beach of Paralimni Sands remains unspoilt.
