Situated at the mouth of the Tairua River, this small town of 1,430 inhabitants is a popular vacation destination for New Zealanders. It offers a number of good addresses and is set in lush green surroundings. Its sheltered harbor is ideal for sailing or kayaking. Volcanic Mount Paku is easily accessible from Paku Road and is well worth a visit for its views over the region. The resort of Pauanui, built from scratch, is on the other side of Tairua harbor, and can be reached in 10 minutes by ferry. For van life enthusiasts, a campground is provided by the municipality.
