Halfway between Tairua and Whangamata, the tiny hamlet of Opoutere offers an idyllic setting for relaxation. It's reached by a half-hour round trip detour (nine kilometers one way, eighteen kilometers round trip). With its sublime beach, mangroves and several walking trails (forty-five-minute round trip), it's a very pleasant place to be. To the south of this beach is the entrance to Wharekawa harbor, where several species of endangered seabirds breed, such as the tūturiwhatu (pluvier guignard in French, dotterel in English). In Maori, Opoutere means "the place of floating posts".
