An extension of Tauranga, Mount Maunganui is the seaside resort par excellence. Kiwis and backpackers flock here all year round. Its splendid seafront is perfect for surfing and swimming, and the peak that dominates it is an icon in the landscape. This extinct volcanic cone once served as a pa (fortified Maori village). Its name comes from mauao, meaning "caught by the dawn". Legend has it that, heartbroken over a broken heart, the mountain asked the people of the night to take it out to sea and drown it. On arrival at the ocean's edge, the sun rose and chased away the spirits who left her there.
