This small town is located 12 km south of Montilla and owes part of its name to the fact that it was on the border between the Christian and Moorish kingdoms at the time of the Reconquest. It is a beautiful white town in the Campiña that is home to the Plaza de San José, a harmonious and cheerful hexagonal square built in 1810, as well as several churches (16th and 17th centuries) and beautiful houses of former great landowners. A few kilometres south of Aguilar, the Zoñar Lagoon Nature Reserve, with a public observatory, is home to many species of migratory birds, some of which are, alas, in danger of extinction.
