Located in the valley of the river Genil, between two sierras, this town offers a steep landscape below the A92 motorway linking Granada to Seville. Gateway to the kingdom of Granada, the city was conquered on May 28, 1486 by the Catholic Monarchs as a prelude to the end of the Nasrid period. It has some interesting remains dating from the Arab domination such as its wall, and its alcazaba, an Arab palace, which is gradually being restored. It is also known as a city of water, as there are many springs in the city, almost all of which are channelled into artistic fountains and basins. Views of Loja appear in Duck Soup, a 1927 film.
