Travel Guide Thilafushi

Thilafushi Island cannot be visited. However, you can't miss it, as it can be spotted from afar with its greyish smoke cover which is fraying against the blue sky. It is indeed on this piece of land that the Maldives garbage is deposited. It is also called "Rubbish Island". As there is no incinerator in the Maldives, the waste from Malé and its surroundings is stored on this island. This is a sensitive issue, as it undermines the country's idyllic postcard image. There has been talk for years of setting up a robust waste management system, but despite a succession of projects, nothing has yet been done.
