The village of St Joseph is only interesting because of its environment. El is indeed at the foot of the Maracas valley from where start hiking trails that go up to El Tucuche (count 8 hours of walking) or that allow to reach Maracas Bay on the north coast (count 4 hours of walking). For these hikes, it is essential to be accompanied by a guide because one can quickly get lost in this luxuriant forest. St. Joseph was founded in 1592 by Antonio de Berrio and is the oldest city in Trinidad & Tobago. Originally named San José de Oruña, it served as the capital of Spanish Trinidad between 1592 and 1783
