A university town, Tunapuna is also known for its large popular market along the main road and for its steel band during Carnival. Tunapuna is also known for its famous children: pianist Winifred Atwell, who was born here, and writer-historian-journalist-sociologist Cyril Lionel Robert James, who was born and buried here. He made a name for himself through all the books and essays he wrote in London and the USA, and locally for his involvement with the anti-colonial Beacon Group. He wrote numerous books on the Haitian Revolution led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, and on the black diaspora in the West Indies.
