Diego Martin owes its name to a Spanish explorer, Don Diego Martin, but developed mainly in the 1780s when French planters and their slaves settled here. Today, it is one of Trinidad's most prosperous cities. Located to the west of Port of Spain, at the start of the Chaguaramas peninsula, Diego Martin is a good base for nature lovers wishing to explore the area and discover the undeveloped western part of the north coast. It's also home to the first modern steelpan factory, so don't miss the chance to see how these instruments are made!
