Monos is the fourth largest island in the archipelago, no more than 3 km wide. It owes its name to the noisy howler monkeys that populate it, so named by the Spaniards. The bay of Monos is especially beautiful, with its beaches and luxurious villas surrounded by palm trees. Very old pines and wild orchids are a delight for hikers, who are few and far between as this island is not very touristy. The island also boasts a spectacular aerial root system of kapok trees. These fascinating trees were the subject of many legends in Trinidad: they were said to have the ability to move to gather in the forest.
