As the name of the archipelago suggests, there are 6 Five Islands (Nelson, Pelican, Lenegan, Caledonia, Craig and Rock). They were used by the Warao and Nepuyo tribes of the First Peoples as fishing and bartering stops. In 1498, the Spanish invaders named these islands"Los Cottoros" (the parakeets) in reference to the small green parrots with yellow or orange heads that populate the archipelago. Five islands often served as a gathering and sorting point for new Indian arrivals, before they were accepted on the main island of Trinidad. A huge recreational park of the same name opened in Chaguaramas in 2020.
