Mangroves are the most widespread plant species in the Caroni marshes. It covers 30 km², representing 60% of Trinidad's total mangrove area. This natural habitat is home to 190 species of birds, 24 types of fish, caimans, anacondas and anteaters. In the bird family, the king of the swamp is certainly the famous scarlet ibis, the national emblem of Trinidad & Tobago.
