Smaller and closer to the island of Tobago than its neighbor, the small island of Goat Island is in fact a private property. The island was first purchased by Ian Flemming, the James Bond novelist, who built the only house ever built on the island, which can be seen from the shore but is in ruins. Just behind Goat Island, and partially hidden from view, is Little Tobago, a small uninhabited island of 2 km². Formerly a plantation abandoned at the end of the 19th century, it is now a bird sanctuary. Trails crisscross the island, which can be visited in a day, accompanied by a guide.
