Founded in 1970 by Bruno Hussar (1911-1996), an Egyptian-born Dominican friar of Jewish origin, the village is called Neve Shalom/Wahat as-Salam, which means "Oasis of Peace" in Hebrew and Arabic. Today, it is home to over sixty families, both Jewish and Arab, convinced that their differences can be an enrichment. Guided tours of the village can be arranged. The village's only hotel, with some 40 rooms, also serves as a café-restaurant and meeting place, and hosts various cultural events and folk festivals. For more information on the village's history, visit www.wasns.org.
