Mayapán was the centre of Mayan power in Yucatán for two centuries, from 1250 to 1450, when the rulers of the city, the Cocom family, were overthrown and the city was destroyed and then abandoned. The city was strongly influenced by the civilization of Chichén Itzá. The city had a surface area of 6.5 square kilometres, 12,000 inhabitants and some 3,500 buildings, which were protected by a wall. Only some of the buildings on the site have been excavated, such as the Sala de los Frescos and the Templo de los Nichos Pintados, which retain mural paintings. The archaeological area is located a little further than the village of Telchaquillo.
