Morelia, the state capital, is 315 km west of Mexico City and 367 km southeast of Guadalajara. At 1,951 m above sea level, it has a temperate climate with an average temperature of 23°C. It is a beautiful colonial city of pink stone, with some jewels of Mexican baroque architecture, but it is above all a city with an intense cultural and artistic dynamism: a very active university, schools offering Spanish courses for foreigners and numerous events throughout the year. Its 3,000 square meter historic center has over 1,400 listed buildings! In the 19th century, the arrival in power of Porfirio Diaz would transform the city, since its Spanish-style facades, more sober, would be modified to give it a more French air, dear to the dictator.
