In the southwest of the state, Parras de la Fuente is built at an altitude of 1,600 m. In August, the nights can be cold, in winter a thin coat of snow sometimes covers the landscape. But unlike Saltillo, Parras is an oasis in the Coahuila desert. The Sierra Madre, gleaming blue in the background, stops the occasional clouds and harvests their rains. The water, easily absorbed by the bare mountains, runs underground to the basin where Parras is located. Taking advantage of this situation, it was here, in 1596, two years before the foundation of Parras, that Friar Juan de Espinoza planted the first vineyards on the American continent. A vacation spot for the middle classes of Monterrey and Torreón, Parras is a quiet and peaceful town where it is pleasant to stroll among the vineyards, strolling through its streets that converge on the beautiful church of Santa María de las Parras, built in 1648. Surrounded by countless water wells, equipped with an aqueduct, this land that saw the birth of Francisco I. Madero is home to an incredible colony of bats. The two main industries in the city are wine making and denim processing. You can see the cotton fields outside the town on the west side. The cotton is shipped to Parras to be processed into canvas, most of which is exported to the United States, before being re-imported to Mexico in the form of jeans
