Located 30 km west of San Miguel, Cañada de la Virgen sits on a plateau naturally protected by canyons and bordered by mountains. The latter act as astronomical landmarks and offer a commanding view of the Río Laja valley. It stands out for its isolation, being far removed from the 90 other sites listed in the region. Founded by people of Otomí origin, the city's main period of occupation and influence is estimated at between 550 and 1050 AD (Late Classic and Early Post-Classic). Ceramics discovered on site coincide with the beginning of the Toltec era (10th century).
