Located 400 kilometers south of Hermosillo, on the border with the state of Sinaloa (it is closer to the town of Los Mochis), Alamos owes its rise to silver fever, which made it one of the main mining centers of Mexico in the 18th century. The actress María Félix (1914-2002), known as the Doña, was born here and was one of the symbols of the golden age of Mexican cinema. Today, it is a pretty and peaceful small town of colonial style. The beauty of its Moorish-influenced architecture has earned it national heritage status: the buildings are beautiful and often decorated with bougainvillea. The surroundings are also worth visiting, as this small village is at the crossroads of two ecosystems, the Sonoran desert in the north and the tropical jungles of Sinaloa in the south; hiking and rappelling are practiced there. The area has a rich biodiversity and is known as a bird sanctuary.
