Pátzcuaro ("the place of the black stones" in Purépucha) is a beautiful city of 45,000 inhabitants, perched at an altitude of 2,175 meters in the heart of the region of the Purépechas communities. It was founded by their descendants in 1324 to become one of the three capitals of the Tarasque Empire. It was later subjected to the brutal reign of the Spanish conquistador Nuño de Guzmán, only to be liberated by Bishop Vasco de Quiroga and his utopian ideas. The great attraction of the village is its lake, which is home to four small inhabited islands: Janitzio, Pacanda, Tecuena and Yunuén. Here the temperature can drop to 3°C: remember to bring warm clothes.
