The town grew from a fort built at the request of the Grand Admiral at the start of the Conquest in 1493. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and numerous balnearíos, the capital of the province of Monseñor Nouel bears the gentle nickname of "City of Hydrangeas". The first peace treaty in America was negotiated here between emissaries of Christopher Columbus and the insurgent Francisco Roldán. Later, and less gloriously, the town became the private property of one of Trujillo's brothers, who established his personal army here. He was not mistaken, as the region is rich in rice paddies, cattle breeding, iron and nickel deposits.
