18 km from Saint-Pierre, this town of 35,000 inhabitants, a historic agricultural centre, is marked by its brightly coloured huts and their wrought-iron balconies. Enclosed between the lava of the volcano and the inhospitable sea, the site has long remained unexploited. Discovered in 1784, it was then enhanced by the planting of high-value species such as clove and nutmeg. Later, coffee, sugar cane, vanilla and vetiver were developed. Tourism is little developed, but "Saint-Jo" will be a good holiday resort to enjoy the wild South and radiate towards the land of the volcano. On the other hand, at night, it's total desert!
