The charming agricultural village takes its name from the small island located 100 m from the coast, the only piece of land detached from Reunion and inhabited by birds. This small island, which can be admired from afar, is located 2 km from the village of the same name. A walk allows you to observe the isolated rock and the raging ocean. From the piton du Calvaire, near the town centre, a beautiful panorama opens up over the slopes of the wild south, its sugar cane fields and the sea. The economy of the region is mainly based on sugar cane, food crops and fruit, as well as honey and livestock in the Hauts. Garlic is also celebrated in October or November.
