A port, industrial and commercial city, Le Port is bordered by the imposing Rivière des Galets, which bears its name well in dry periods, and which is crossed to reach Saint-Paul. The railway line was opened in 1882 and the first docks were inaugurated in 1886. In 1895, the village was baptized, detaching itself from Saint-Paul and becoming the smallest commune on the island, on a spit of land without water and dusty: the Plaine des Galets. In recent years, the commune has begun a work of study and development of its industrial and technical heritage, which it combines with contemporary artistic creation.
