The town was built as a commune in 1890 and takes its name from the "Possession of the King" in honour of the King of France. It extends over a large part of the Mafate circus and its highest point is near the top of the Gros Morne. Although largely residential, La Possession offers some very good accommodation and restaurants. Hikers pass through here to access the many trails known to be used during the Grand Raid. Take the time to stop at La Grande Chaloupe to discover its lazaret. Although it was the last to be built on the island, it is the only one in such a good state of conservation.
