Cultivated since 1716 and long dubbed the "granary of Cayenne" for its fertile soils, the area's main town is Tonate, named after a settler who set up a cotton mill here. Macouria then turned to cattle and pig breeding, of which Carapa is now the epicenter. More a dormitory town for its 10,000 inhabitants than a tourist stopover, its church is well worth a stopover, but so are its surroundings: flower plantations and ranches abound here. In fact, there are a number of pleasant trails to explore on horseback. If you don't have a car, you can get there from Cayenne by bus (€5 TIG or Agglo'bus - cacl-transport.fr) or cab.
