Kourou is synonymous with the space center and Ariane. The4th largest town in French Guiana (after Cayenne, Matoury and Saint-Laurent) by population (around 26,000), it offers striking contrasts between the modern and the ancient. In the area furthest back from the coast, Vieux-Bourg has retained its Creole architecture, authentic atmosphere and melancholy air. But Kourou-la-Nouvelle has also developed rapidly with the installation of the space center: large hotels, shopping malls... You'll see several worlds here!In addition, two older populations live side by side in this multi-faceted town; two villages stand out: the Saramaca ("Black Brown") village, with its many craftsmen whose wood-carving art you can admire, and the Galibi Amerindian village at the end of the Cocoteraie beach.
