Its motto: "To the fiery words, the oxen remain deaf". The commune has never hosted a penal institution or gold rush, and for two centuries its inhabitants have lived peacefully from farming and fishing. Around 1912, however, the daily life of Iracoubo was turned upside down by the arrival of the balata and rosewood industries. The region came under the sway of a few escaped convicts, who spread terror until a platoon of Senegalese infantrymen intervened. From the 1930s onwards, the commune returned to the rhythm of its traditional occupations. The Saint-Joseph church is well worth a visit.
