Located on either side of the Approuague River, 130 km east of Cayenne, the commune of Régina covers 12,000 km² and has a population of around 900. The town of Régina itself is a recent creation. In fact, the oldest town is Guisanbourg, founded around 1788. It was the result of Malouet's policy of examining Baron de Bessner's colonization project, when he met the Swiss agricultural engineer Guisan in Suriname and commissioned him to reclaim the lowlands. Today, the commune has regained its calm, but its gold-fuelled past is still very much with us, as evidenced by the industrial wrecks scattered here and there.
