A village in the commune of Roura, Cacao is located on a plateau on the banks of the Comté River. Although it housed a penitentiary in the 19th century, Cacao really came into its own in 1977, when the Hmongs, political refugees from Upper Laos, settled here. Today, Cacao is a quiet farming village, usually visited on Sundays for a stopover at the obligatory market: rich in color, it abounds in fruit and vegetables, ready-made meals, local juices, embroidery and souvenirs. Don't miss the famous insect museum, or the many hiking trails in the area.
