This small commune is located about 1 hour downstream from Saint-Georges, and the river system is a major communication route in Ouanary. This hamlet has about 120 inhabitants. It is characterized by its isolation and by its historical and archaeological past. In the 19th century, the Palikour Amerindians were used as laborers on the numerous dwellings created by the Jesuit fathers migrated to the Oyapock. They were replaced by slaves from Africa who, after a few years, became the main population. Ouanary was for a long time the country of roucou, indigo and sugar cane.
