After a 1-hour crossing from Kourou, the wide, splendid bay comes into view. Freshly disembarked like the first convicts in 1852, we turn left at the end of the pontoon to skirt the Baie des Cocotiers, then pass in front of the police station. Then, leaving the coastal path behind, take a steep paved path to the top of the island. Here, you'll find a vast clearing surrounded by various buildings. Continuing along the left-hand side, you first see the chief medical officer's dwelling before reaching the church, arguably the most beautiful building on this 28-hectare island.
