Although not the most attractive, Île du Diable is probably the best-known of the three islands. Since the cable car that used to link it to Royale is no longer in use, it has become very difficult, if not perilous, to reach: its shores offer no safe anchorage to shelter from the often violent waves. For the Galibi Indians, the islet was home to Iroucan, the evil spirit. In any case, the rocky islet was assigned to political prisoners. Between the new arrivals, those who were amnestied, those who escaped and those who died there, Devil's Island has seen quite a lot.
