Balme means "cave" in Celtic language. It was a place of refuge for the Allobroges tribe who came to gather and hunt on the Mandallaz mountain. La Balme-de-Sillingy is today a residential commune, 10 km from Annecy, close to the main roads to Paris, Geneva and Lyon. Situated at the foot of the Mandallaz - classified as a protected biotope - walks, mountain biking and horse riding are possible on about 15 km of marked trails! This dynamic commune is keen to develop ecotourism on its site. The setting is above all rural and the lake is a walking area where swimming is prohibited; one can enjoy the activities and events organised throughout the year by the municipality and associations including the Festival of Performing Arts in March. To visit near the lake: the Parc des Jardins de Haute-Savoie!
