A village of almost 300 inhabitants, Coussay was once the seat of a priory dependent on the Saint-Paul-de-Commery abbey, which was elevated to the rank of Benedictine abbey in the year 800. The commune has on its territory the castle of Coussay built at the beginning of the XVIth century and of Renaissance style and the castle of Tourderie or Tour-de-Ry, classified with the Historic Monuments since 1993. The village church has also been listed since 1952. Coussay belongs to the Community of Communes of Haut-Poitou and has the particularity of sharing part of the territory of the hamlet of Brizay with Verrue, the neighboring commune.
