Chizé, about 850 inhabitants, was the scene of one of the great battles of the Hundred Years War. In 1373, Guillaume Duguesclin seized its fortress, in the hands of the English since the treaty of Brétigny (1360). Traces of the foundations of the castle remain. Chizé, like the national forest, of which the village is the main gateway: you can walk or cycle along many paths, including the GR 36. Chizé, a magical forest? Mélusine is said to have stopped here in search of a watering place: the fairy made a seven-trunked oak tree appear in the centre of which a natural basin filled with water, Mélusine's bathtub that you can admire today.
