Located in the heart of the Vals de Saintonge region and in the immediate vicinity of a major road, Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a major stopover on the road to Santiago de Compostela. The town is also steeped in history, as evidenced by its strategic role during the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, Eleanor of Aquitaine gave Saintonge as a dowry to her second husband, Henry II Plantagenet, King of England. Under Louis XIV, the town became rich again thanks to the brandy trade before being hit by phylloxera. Today, the town - awarded the "two flowers" label - attracts walkers who stroll along its cobbled streets.
