A small village of less than 3,000 inhabitants, Échillais is famous for its transporter bridge, the last one in France. You can visit the Romanesque church and its many sculptures. Situated on the left bank of the Charente, opposite Rochefort, Échillais is a good base for exploring the Rochefort area and enjoying the countryside. Human presence dates back to prehistoric times and excavations have also revealed Gallo-Roman activity. The church was built in the 12th century and served as a parish for a fortified castle. The Wars of Religion saw it disappear in 1577. The Arsenal of Rochefort participated in the economic development of Echillais.
